5 Minutes With… Jason Wakefield, Todd Research

In the latest instalment of our security industry executive interview series, we sat down with Jason Wakefield, Sales Director at Todd Research, to talk about his company, industry opportunities, technology, AI and career advice…

Tell us about your company, products and services.

Todd Research have been trading since 1950 and are global experts in manufacturing and distributing world class security threat detection equipment designed to improve the safety and security of the general public buildings and staff within.

What have been the biggest challenges the Security industry has faced over the past 12 months?

Todd Research pride themselves at being one step ahead of terrorist methodologies and technologies through having a thorough understanding of terrorist and activists methodologies – the methods that are used by the said groups are fast changing and trying to foresee future terrorist / activists delivery methods can be a challenge.

And what have been the biggest opportunities?

Using our development expertise, we are entering into the aviation industry with some innovative solutions for screening of in-flight supplies.

What is the biggest priority for the Security industry in 2020?

Using technology for the protection of the general public while visiting stadiums / arenas and general concert sites.

What are the main trends you are expecting to see in the market in 2020?

We have seen year-on-year growth over the last few years within the scanning and screening industry and we foresee 2020 to follow this trend.

What technology is going to have the biggest impact on the market this coming year?

We have seen a large increase on enquiries for our trace detection equipment – this technology has become so much more affordable so it is now being sold into commercial companies in addition to x-ray machines for additional protection of staff

In 2023 we’ll all be talking about…?

Within the next 3 years you will see the introduction of AI (artificial intelligence) technology within security operations – the introduction of this technology negates the human element for decision making. You will still need a human to confirm whatever the AI software has alerted on.

Which person in, or associated with, the Security industry would you most like to meet?

I would like to sit down and have a coffee with James Brokenshire (the Minister of State for Security) .

You go to the bar at the Total Security Summit – what’s your tipple of choice?

Definitely Coffee – I need this in my life.

What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

At Todd research no two days are the same but I most enjoy visiting unusual places and meeting new people.

And what’s the most challenging?

Entering into new territories are always a challenge because you have various legislation boxes that need to ticked for radiation compliance – you also need to find a local partner that can be trusted to help grow your business within the new territory.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

When you receive and angry email you should always wait until the next day before responding – well this and don’t eat yellow snow.
