Selectaglaze, specialists in bespoke secondary glazing, were chosen to bring their expertise to the Banqueting House, in London, Whitehall. This magnificent Grade I listed building is the grandest and best-known example of the architectural genre of banqueting houses and the only large withstanding component of the Palace of Whitehall. It was designed by Inigo Jones in 1619-22 and contains the only surviving in situ ceiling painting series by Sir Peter Paul Rubens. Selectaglaze treated 39 windows – and created a piece of secondary glazing history too.
Style you can see, security you can trust
Unobtrusive window security was the main requirement in the project brief. Selectaglaze design replaced the intrusive blast net curtains, allowing daylight to flood into the stunning Main Hall. Whilst sympathetic and discreet, the secondary glazing treatment offered ISO 16933:2007 certified security level.
Additional consideration was given to UV light protection for the historic painting. Selectaglaze solution provided essential UV filtering to the Thomson specification approved by expert bodies including National Gallery and V&A.
Keeping the warmth in and the noise out
From an acoustic and thermal point of view, Selectaglaze needed to keep out the sounds of Whitehall hustle and bustle – and keep the warmth in. The secondary glazing not only offered certified level of security but also significant noise reduction in excess of 45dB and improved energy efficiency.

At up to 3.6m high and 2m wide, the Main Hall windows were treated with what turned out to be the largest ever single casement to be blast tested in the UK.
